THERAPY & Your identity

For quite some time, you may have yearned to feel valued and seen as an individual with a story, experiences and emotions worthy of acknowldgement and understanding

If you’re here, you’re likely navigating through some of life’s toughest challenges, grappling with feelings of anxiety, depression or perhaps the weight of past experiences that linger in your mind.

You may be struggling with recurring stressors of everyday life, feeling overwhelmed by the pressures of work, relationships, and societal expectations.

You’ve been feeling:

  • Used and taken advantage of
  • Last on the priority list
  • Unsure about what you want, thus unable to communicate it
  • Complacent in certain relationships but unable to decide if it’s time to leave
  • Unhappy and unconfident
  • Grief and loss over relationships or the passing of a loved one

I want to help you heal so you can:

  • Set boundaries before resentment sets in
  • Tend to your needs as they come up
  • Live life out loud, as your truest self
  • Be more decisive about letting go of unhealthy relationship patterns and not overthink
  • Implement productive ways of managing difficult losses

“We are all stronger, smarter, talented, beautiful, and more resilient than we were told..”

Not Your Average LGBTQ+ Therapist

Fitkeesha E. Beckford, LMFT

Clients who I’ve been able to work best with are those who value authenticity and inclusivity. As a Black Lesbian Woman, I bring a unique perspective to the therapeutic relationship, understanding firsthand the challenges of navigating intersecting identities and facing microaggressions in various spheres of life, including the workplace. My approach is rooted in empathy, respect, and cultural competence, creating a safe space where clients feel understood, validated, and empowered to explore their experiences without fear of judgment.

What sets me apart is my unwavering commitment to addressing the intersectionality of identity and mental health. I recognize the importance of creating a therapeutic environment that acknowledges and affirms clients’ diverse identities, experiences, and lived realities. Whether clients are grappling with issues related to lack of boundaries, workplace stress, or feelings of sadness and anxiety, I provide personalized support and guidance tailored to their unique needs and goals. My goal is to empower clients to cultivate resilience, self-compassion, and inner strength as they navigate life’s challenges and embrace their authentic selves.

My Solutions-Focused Approach

In my sessions, change happens through a multifaceted approach that combines solution-focused therapy with a range of other modalities tailored to each client’s unique needs and goals.  I firmly believe that individuals are not broken, but rather in need of healing and growth.  My therapeutic orientation is centered around challenging unhealthy cycles, dismantling stereotypes, and empowering clients to redefine their beliefs and narratives about themselves and their lives.

While I help those I serve create a sense of safety within the therapeutic relationship, I also ensure they walk away with a sense of safety internally. One where they are not plagued by internal judgments or rigid standards that keep them in “no-win” situations.

With a direct yet compassionate approach, I guide clients in identifying and chipping away at thoughts and behaviors that no longer serve them.  I often assign homework or exercises to support ongoing growth and self-discovery outside our sessions.  By fostering an empowering therapeutic relationship, I embolden clients to make meaningful shifts that lead to lasting change and transformation in their lives.

FAQs on Affirmative Therapy for LGBTQ+

What is affirmative therapy for LGBTQ+ individuals?

How does affirmative therapy differ from traditional therapy?

Affirmative therapy differs from traditional therapy in its focus on understanding and addressing the unique challenges and experiences faced by LGBTQ+ individuals.  Therapists in affirmative therapy are trained to be culturally competent and affirming of diverse sexual orientations and gender identities, providing specialized support tailored to the needs of LGBTQ+ clients.

Is affirmative therapy only for individuals who are questioning their gender identity or sexual orientation?

No, affirmative therapy is beneficial for individuals at any stage of their LGBTQ+ journey, whether they are questioning, exploring, or fully embracing their identities.  Affirmative therapists support clients in navigating a wide range of issues related to LGBTQ+ identity, relationships, and mental health.

What if I'm not ready to come out to my therapist?

Affirmative therapists understand that coming out is a personal and complex process.  You are not required to disclose your LGBTQ+ identify to your therapists until you feel comfortable and ready to do so.  Your therapist will respect your confidentiality and support you in your journey, regardless of your current level of openness about your identity.
